Newsflash Diani Children’s Village
# 05/2008Receive much greeting from DCV and a peaceful Kenya!
In general the children are doing fine. The four small children are enjoying playgroup and are learning to socialise with other children. Their speech has improved a lot and they basically do not stop talking!
The older children are also doing very well and have just come for their holidays. Humphrey and Hellen are getting used to their new life in boarding school, a completely new experience.
The extention of the new layers house has been successful and the project is in full operation. Unfortunately it is quite difficult to sell our products at the moment due to the political crisis in the beginning of the year which resulted in a decline of tourist . Many of the hotels and restaurants who usually buy from us are closed until July, when we expect tourism to pick up again. We have however decided to continue running the projects and hope that the situation will improve soon.
Our furniture workshop has also been affected by the situation. Our workshop manager, Ishmael fell sick and has to undergo an operation. He us recovering well and we expect him soon to be able to resume his duties.
The girls who are taking part in a dressmaking course have made a lot of progress during the last few months. They are now producing some nice items which are for sale in our shop.
We are very happy to announce that so far we have raised Ksh 550.000,- for the new vehicle project. The plan is to use the minibus as a “matatu” ( local public transport) during the time it is not busy carrying children to and from school.
The income raised should cover our fuel and maintenance cost aswell as the driver’s salary. On behalf of the children, staff-and committee members, we would like to express our sincere thanks for your great assistance.
